Nothing Is Real | Baignade Interdite Limited Edition Print
Self-portrait, on having to hide my grief and suffocating in it to make others comfortable.
These were my first ever self-portraits, taken the day after my birthday with 5kg of strawberries. I was inspired by Strawberry Fields Forever, a song I listened to with my Dad in the car when I was little. We loved the Beatles, especially Sgt. Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour, and I have found myself listening to them again since he died, as a desperate attempt for connection.
The camera was on a tripod in manual focus with a 10-second timer, shooting 5 photos at a time, flash pointed at me, 1/200s, ISO 400, f/5.6. That gave me just enough time to get up, press the button, get back down and move, so I could capture the movement of the water and the strawberries.
This wasn’t the self-portrait I thought I’d take when I started Baignade Interdite, and it took me a while to feel ready for it. Instead of powerful and sexy, I’m bathing in strawberries to represent my grief. You see me as confident, hard-working and creative. You don’t see the grief. When I’m alone in my bathroom, it takes up so much space I can hardly breathe. If life is going to be this surreal, let me at least make it fun.
Part of Baignade Interdite, a surrealist photography series shot entirely in a bathtub in North London by Pauline Di Silvestro.
Fine art A3 uncensored print. Limited edition of 5 copies only. £75.
Free UK shipping. EU shipping £10.
