On reclaiming our bodies and making a profit.
Spookey Bones is often my go-to model for wacky ideas (and Lord knows I have a lot of them), so when I called to say I was going to paint her gold and make it rain, she didn’t hesitate. The shoot was inspired by her act “All That Litters Is Gold”, set to Ren’s “Money Game II”. I already had a collection of oyster shells from our local seafood restaurant, one of the perks of living near Crouch End.
What I love most is that my assistant was my Mum, and it’s my Mum making it rain on Spookey. The message is clear: the female body sells, whether we like it or not. The more we show, the more people want to see, and the more we get shamed for it. Don’t you dare be talented and pretty, you’ll never be taken seriously. But Spookey sells seashells by the seashore, because she can.
Part of Baignade Interdite, a surrealist photography series shot entirely in a bathtub in North London by Pauline Di Silvestro.
Fine art A3 print. Limited edition of 5 copies only. £75.
Free UK shipping. EU shipping £10.
