The Curse | Baignade Interdite Limited Edition Print

£75.00

On premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Luna Lussuria as a werewolf, ready to pounce: a frightened animal left with no other option but to attack. One of my most striking images, and one of my most personal and emotional shoots.

There isn’t one side to the woman you see. You want us pretty, sensual, smiling, fit, healthy, at your service, subdued and obedient. You are terrified of what we might hide, and you’re right to be.

Luna and I both have PMDD, premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It isn’t a hormonal imbalance but the brain not reacting to normal hormonal changes as it should. In the one to two weeks before a period it brings severe depression, anxiety, paranoia, brain fog, insomnia, joint and muscle pain and intrusive suicidal thoughts, then lifts shortly after the period starts. Every month, like clockwork. There is no cure, only trial and error with hormonal contraception and managing the side effects. PMDD affects around 1 in 20 people who menstruate. Some go their whole lives without a diagnosis, and some have their uterus and ovaries removed as early as 30. I was diagnosed at 28, after 14 years of symptoms.

Part of Baignade Interdite, a surrealist photography series shot entirely in a bathtub in North London by Pauline Di Silvestro.

Fine art A3 uncensored print. Limited edition of 5 copies only. £75.
